The VFW was originally chartered by The
Article 1 of VFW Constitution
The purpose of this corporation shall be fraternal, patriotic, historical and educational:
To preserve and strengthen comradeship among its members: To assist worthy comrades,
To perpetuate the memory and history of our dead, and to assist their widows and orphans.
To maintain true allegiance to the Government of the United States of America and fidelity to its constitution and laws, to foster true patriotism, To maintain and extend the institutions of American freedom, and to preserve and defend the United States from all her enemies whomsoever.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars has a rich tradition in enhancing the lives of millions through its community service programs and special projects. From providing free phone cards to our nation's active-duty military personnel to raising money for the World War II memorial, the VFW is there, "honoring the dead by helping the living."
There is a common bond that exists between the men and women who have shared the military experience in battle: A shared sense of duty and a common belief in a cause higher than self. Our nations' veterans chose to serve and by doing so, assumed all the risks associated with maintaining freedom. VFW members are here because they understand the true essence of
